![]() Sixteen African American soldiers earned the Medal of Honor in combat.Īpproximately 38,000 African American soldiers lost their lives in the war. They fought in 449 engagements and 39 major battles. There was a total of 186,000 Black soldiers who served in 163 units in the Union Army.
